Benign Pigmented Lesion Removal

Spots, blemishes, and marks, such as sun spots/age spots, freckles, cafe-au-lait, are easily treated with the GentleMax system.

Melanin is what gives our skin its color. Dark skinned people have more melanin in their skin than light skinned people. Pigmented lesions have an abnormal concentration of melanin in a particular area. This may be present at birth, such as brown pigmented birthmarks and café-au-lait spots. Another cause is excessive sun exposure resulting in freckles and brown sun/age spots (Solar Lentigines). The GentleMax laser easily treats these pigmented lesions.

Q&A - Benign Pigmented Lesion Removal

[open/close all]

How does the laser work to remove pigmented lesions?

The laser delivers light in very short, high intensity pulses which pass through the skin. The rapid absorption of light causes the pigment molecule to destruct. The pigment molecule is then removed by the body’s natural filtering system.

What type of pigmented lesions can be treated?

Pigmented lesions occur in approximately 15% of the population. Solar Letigines (sun or age spots), café-au-lait birthmarks can be removed. The laser can treat these spots anywhere on the body, more commonly on the face, hands, and chest.

What can I expect during treatment?

The treatment causes immediate darkening of the pigmented area followed by mild crusting which may last 5 to 10 days. For the majority of lesions only one treatment is required, however, depending on the size, color, and depth more than one treatment may be required. A burning sensation will be felt at the time of treatment and for 1 to 3 hours afterwards the spots may feel slightly tender.

How do I take care of it at home?

All activities are permitted, including showering and bathing. An antibiotic ointment may be applied on the crusted lesions. The lesions should be allowed to fall off without scrubbing or picking. New skin will be revealed after the lesions fall off. Sunscreen should be worn at all times to prevent further sun/age spots from occurring.

Are there any alternatives available?

Bleaching creams (hydroquinone), Retin-A, sun blocks and liquid nitrogen are the traditional treatments for brown skin disorders. The advantage of using laser is the treatment is more precise, predictable, and uniform results can be achieved in less time. Avri Laser Aesthetics carries the Obagi line of medical skin care. This clinically proven system restores the healthy function of your skin at the cellular level and may be another option for you, either alone or in conjunction with our laser treatments.

What are the side effects?

Persistent or permanent pigmentation changes can occur with either lightening or darkening the skin, although these side effects are rare. There is also a remote risk of scarring, infection and textural changes.
